The Pine Sol Recall : What We Know

It’s always terrifying news when a beloved household product is suddenly recalled. A couple of weeks ago Clorox announced it would be recalling some of the scented Pine Sol products that were found to contain bacteria. Leading to a chain of news stories that absolutely horrified the nation. But let’s break down what happened, and how Hero Cleaning avoids this type of danger.

What was wrong with the Pine Sol?

Select scented Pine Sol products were found to contain a bacteria called pseudomonas aeruginosa. According to the CDC, this bacteria is formed in the environment, in soil and water. Although not known to be life threatening, over 2,500 people died from it in 2017. Scary numbers, but even scarier when you consider that Pine Sol is hardly the most dangerous product in your cleaning closet.

What Products were Affected?

According to Clorox, only the scented Pine Sol was affected. Specifically those whose printed code begins with the prefix A4. They stressed that it was not the original Pine Sol that was affected, and instead it was the lavender and lemon scented varieties. These are the ones processed at their Georgia plant.

History of Cleaning Product Recalls

This is not the first case of cleaning products being recalled. In fact, even commercial cleaning products have fallen victim to compromised products. In fact, the industry of cleaning products as a whole has always been questionable. From breathing problems to skin rashes, we have heard all kinds of horror stories from some household names.

The truth is, cleaning products are often filled with harmful chemicals. Many cleaning products contain bleaches and ammonia’s, which are known to cause breathing problems. Hero Cleaning has always held the belief that cleaning should not be dangerous. We have put the safety of our employees and our clients first when it comes to the services we provide.

The Most Dangerous Culprits

Cleaning products in general, unless specifically labeled, are harmful. That’s because the same products that are effective in fighting grease and other household stains are also highly flammable. We don’t need to look further than the most classic household cleaner: ammonia.

But what are some other classic household menaces that you should steer clear from? Here are the products we recommend you get rid of:

  • Oven cleaner: Unless your oven hasn’t been cleaned in over 3 years there is no need for such a harsh chemical in your home. Instead use a baking soda and vinegar mix for tough stains.

  • Degreaser: This again has to do with the level of dirt in your home. A regular cleaning schedule will prevent the need for harsh chemicals. Degreaser is typically used in bathtubs that are heavily stained. If your bathtub isn’t in such bad shape you can easily use dish soap and a good scrub or magic eraser.

  • Bleach: I’m sure we do not need to dive too deep into why bleach is bad in your home. The truth is that bleach leaves off dangerous fumes, and although some might associate that smell with cleanliness, we associate it with danger.

Why it’s Important

We frequently discuss our stance on the cleaning power of vinegar. We know that disinfecting a bathroom does not require bleach. We also know that mixing cleaning products can also leave fumes and can create poisonous combinations. All perils that we will never bring into your house.
